Squire Boys' Lose Final To Northfield
04 Jan 2007 - ( Sports )

by Eric Christiansen
If the Manchester Squires have acquired a theme for December, it might be too little, too late.
The Squires went on an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter of the championship game of the Wabash County Tournament, but it only cut the Norse lead to 34-29.
Northfield held on down the stretch and pulled out a 49-37 win to win their first county tourney in 10 years.
“We didn’t score a lot of points, but we kept our opponents down, and you always have a chance to win if you play good defense,” Northfield coach Moe Smedley said.
Manchester coach Gary Goshert was feeling the exact opposite emotions after the game.
“It’s somewhat frustrating,” he said. “We had the effort coming down the stretch, and it isn’t like they aren’t trying. We just weren’t the same team we were last night against Wabash. We’re trying to get better at handling these situation. It’s assertiveness. It’s being aggressive verses not being tentative. Gosh darn, that’s a hard way to play.”
Northfield raced out to a 9-2 lead, six of those points coming from tourney MVP Bryce Shafer.
The Squires cut the lead to 13-10 in the second quarter after Aaron Medley hit two free throws, and David Cable stole the ensuing inbounds pass and hit a baseline jumper with 3:30 left. ....Read More

Lady Squires' Upset In Final By Wabash
04 Jan 2007 - ( Sports )

by Eric Christiansen
When a team doesn’t score a basket in the last 10:34, it usually isn’t a good sign. It wasn’t a good sign for the Manchester Lady Squires Saturday night in the championship game of the Wabash County Tournament.
Wabash held Manchester to just four free throws over the final 10:34, and went 8-9 from the line themselves to pull off the upset over the Lady Squires 45-37.
With 2:26 left in the third quarter, Manchester led 33-26, but a three pointer from freshman Brooklyn Short and a four point play from Jordan Fox tied it up heading into the fourth quarter.
Audrey Siebrase gave Manchester their final lead, going 1-2 from the free throw line, but another three from Short, followed by a steal by Chelsea Traver, and a basket from Traver a minute later, gave Wabash a 38-34 lead.
Down the stretch, Manchester missed six straight shots and went 1-4 from the line. Meanwhile, Wabash held on to the ball, and hit their free throws.
“We knew they only had one team foul, so we knew that for them to get to the one and one, they were going to have to foul us several times,” Wabash coach Scott Bumgardner said. “We wanted to hang on to that lead dearly, so we slowed things down a little bit.” ....Read More

JV Boys Finish Third
04 Jan 2007 - ( Sports )

The boys’ JV team played better than they did in their first game against Southwood, but it wasn’t enough in a 43-31 loss in the first round of the Wabash County Tournament Friday morning.
Two weeks ago, the Squires fell to the Knights 46-28. Friday morning, Manchester trailed by just one at halftime, but a 12-2 third quarter put some distance between the Knights and Squires.
“I think we played much better today than two weeks ago when we played them,” coach Anthony Sorg said. “I feel like we are getting better, but there are still things we need to do to get over the hump and turn these losses into wins.”
Stephan Taylor scored for Southwood for a 17-10 lead, but Corey Thomas hit two straight three pointers in the final minute to cut it to 17-16 at halftime.
“We hit some big three pointers in the second quarter, and I think that showed us that we can play with this team,” Sorg said.
Manchester, however, was only able to hit one basket in the third quarter, and Southwood increased their lead to 29-18 at the end of three. Both teams played even in the fourth, but Manchester couldn’t cut the lead under nine points in the fourth quarter.
Jody Griggs led the Squires with eight points, nine rebounds, five steals, and three assists. Corey Thomas had eight points and two rebounds, Gidley had six points, Binkley had five points and one rebound, Jon Walker had two points and seven rebounds, and Nathan Miller had two points and one rebound.
Consolation Game
The JV team finished third in the Wabash County Tournament after dominating Wabash 35-18.
Seven of the eight Squires scored, as Manchester never trailed in the game.
With the scored tied at 10-10 in the second quarter, Jon Walker nailed a three from the left corner, followed by a three point play from Corey Thomas to give the Squires a 16-10 halftime lead.
In the second half, it was all Manchester.
Broc Skaar scored early, followed by a lay up from Jody Griggs off a steal and assist from Thomas. Griggs scored on an offensive rebound put back, and Walker hit 1-2 free throws to increase the lead to 23-10.
Griggs led the Squires with eight points and eight rebounds, Skaar had six points and three rebounds, Thomas had five points, four rebounds, four assists, and four steals, Gidley had five points and two rebounds, Walker had four points and two rebounds, Binkley had three points, three rebounds, and three assists, and Aaron Olinger had two points and six rebounds.

JV Girls' Team Edged In Championship Game

The Manchester JV girls’ basketball team fell behind early, but used a 10-0 second quarter and an 11-2 run to start the second half to cruise to a 34-19 win over Wabash in the first round of the Wabash County Tourney.
Manchester was 1-7 in the first quarter, but went 15-27 the rest of the way.

Seifert led the Lady Squires with 10 points and two rebounds, Pyle had seven points and two rebounds, Fratus had six points and two rebounds, Bedke had five points and three rebounds, and Kyla Zile and Lahman both had two points and three rebounds.
Championship Game
The JV team fell behind early, and couldn’t get closer than the final two point margin in a 32-30 loss to Northfield in the championship game of the county tourney.
Baskets from Lahman and Bedke gave Manchester a 4-2 lead, but Northfield went on a 7-0 run and never trailed.
In the second quarter, Amber Fratus got a steal and lay up to end an eight minute scoring drought, but Northfield ended the half with a basket and two free throws to take a 13-6 lead.
After falling behind 15-6 in the early going of the third quarter, Fratus tried her best to get her team back into the game, scoring six straight points to cut the lead to 15-12, but Northfield ended the quarter on a 6-1 run to lead 21-13.
Fratus scored Manchester’s next two baskets, but Northfield answered with baskets of their own to keep the lead at eight points.
Manchester made one last push in the final minute of the game, as Bedke hit a free throw, but missed her second to cut the lead to 30-25.
Zile grabbed the rebound on Bedke’s miss and scored to cut the lead to three points.
Northfield’s Carly Mast hit one free throw to give the Lady Norse a 31-27 lead.
Bedke tried to cut the lead to one with a three pointer, but was off the mark.
Mast hit 1-2 from the line to give the Norse a 32-27 lead with 3.3 seconds left, and Bedke made it a 32-30 score with a three pointer at the buzzer.
Fratus led Manchester with 11 points, Bedke had six points, Zile had four points and four rebounds, Lahman had two points and four steals, and Pyle had one point and four rebounds

Near $400,000 Grant Awarded For TLC Renovations
14 Dec 2006 - ( Front Page )

by Amy Kraner
Town Council learned December 6 that North Manchester would receive a $394,975 Community Focus Fund grant to renovate the historic Thomas Marshall Town Life Center.
The Town Life Center will get a new roof, a new electrical system that will take the building up to safety code specifications, new ADA compliant restrooms on the first level, and preservations/retrofitting to the existing windows, including scraping and painting the interior and exterior.
The Community Services of North Manchester has worked with the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana and a grant writer from Region III-A to secure the grant through two previous grant proposals.
Apparently the third time is the charm for a grant proposal that went through the competitive Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG), which receives federal funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The $507,300 project includes a $20,000 match from the town and donations from local contributors. The grant award funds will take some time to come in—the town was told not to expect to see them until summer 2007.
The next steps include the writing of the bid specifications for a variety of construction firms, which will be handled by the architect firm involved in the project, Scearce Rudisel Architects. ....Read More
